The epitope was obtained by panning a random peptide library with antisera raised against EHV-1. The epitope has homology to EHV-1 glycoprotein gp2 region 528-533 (HRGRAG) The epitope was selected from a phage display library.
The phage clone containing the epitope was selected by immuno-panning with anti-EHV-1 (strain RAC-H) equine serum. It was further confirmed to bind 5 out of 6 EHV-1 (strain AB4) infected ponies sera as well, while no significant binding by EHV-4 infected sera was observed.
