The epitope was obtained by panning a random peptide library with antisera raised against EHV-1. No significant homology to the predicted EHV-1 sequence was found. The epitope was selected from a phage display library.
The phage clone containing the epitope was selected by immuno-panning with equine antiserum from a gnotobiotic foal infected with EHV-1 strain RAC-H and confirmed by ELISA to have specific recognition by its selecting serum.
