This peptide was based on the deduced amino acid sequence of the E2 glycoprotein of the TRD and TC-83 strains of Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis virus (VEE) as a series of 25mers, overlapping by 5 amino acids. A cysteine residues was included at the carboxy terminus of each peptide to facilitate coupling to carrier protein, if necessary.
A panel of murine hyperimmune ascitic fluids (HIAF) raised against VEE virus subtypes was tested for reactivity with the E2 glycoprotein peptides. VE2pep03 reacted with several HIAFs (8/12), however titers were relatively low. Eight HIAFs had titers to VE2pep03: I-A, I-D (Mena II), I-B (GJ9-IBJ), I-C (P676), I-E, I-F, V (Cabassou CaAr 508) and III-C (71D-1252). Parenthesis indicate VEE subtype specificity.
