Virus load in ears of HSV-1 (strain SC16)-challenged mice were reduced if they received prior immunizations with S. typhimurium live vaccines transfected with a plasmid that encodes multiple copies of a peptide containing the epitope (HSV-1 gD peptide 8-23:SLKMADPNRFRGKDLP). Serum antibody titres from these mice correlated well with the viral load reduction.
