name:
Anti-cord factor (trehalose 6,6'dimycolate) IgG antibody in tuberculosis patients recognizes mycolic acid subclasses.
description:
The cord factor (trehalose-6-6'-dimycolate) glycolipids of M. tuberculosis and M.avium both contain this subclass of mycolic acid.
Tuberculosis patients IgGs react to M. tuberculosis cord factor more strongly than to M. avium cord factor. That would suggest that species specific mycolic acid subclasses are recognized. This is confirmed by the patients stronger recognitition of the species-specific methoxy mycolic fatty acid than of this and other fatty acids that are shared between both species.
