Monoclonal antibodies were used to select neutralization-resistant variant viruses; nucleotide sequencing of the variants revealed a mutation at D164 in the VP2 protein which allowed escape from antibody neutralization. Thus, this residue is demonstrated to be critical for antibody binding.
