This epitope is a consensus sequence derived from more than 200 HVR1 (the hypervariable region in the envelope 2 glycoprotein(E2)) sequences of different Hepatitis C virus isolates.
Polyclonal antibodies specific to the epitope reacted with extracts from tobacco plants infected with a recombinant cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) carrying the epitope as an insert in its coat protein (CP) gene. Similar results were obtained by ELISA and immunoelectron microscopy. .
