name:
Mimicry between the hepatitis C virus polyprotein and antigenic targets of nuclear and smooth muscle antibodies in chronic hepatitis C virus infection.
description:
37% of serum from chronic hepatitis virus infected patients reacted with the epitope while serum from 1 patient with autoimmune hepatitis (n=24), 2 with sclerosing cholangitis (n=12), 2 with hepatitis B virus infection (n=24), and 1 with Wilson's disease, 1 with alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency (n=11), and none with Alagille's syndrome (n=11) or healthy controls (n=24) bound the epitope. The antibody titre to the epitope was similar in HCV patients treated with IFNa therapy as compared to untreated patients. The epitope inhibited the binding of sera from chronic HCV patients to the homologous HCV peptide, polyprotein 146-165.
