description:	76% of serum from chronic hepatitis virus infected patients reacted with the epitope while serum from 4 patients with autoimmune hepatitis (n=24), 1 with Wilson's diease (n=10), 13 with hepatitis B virus infection (n=24), 1 with alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency (n=11) and none with other liver diseases or healthy controls (n=24) bound the epitope. The antibody titre to the epitope was similar in HCV patients treated with IFNa therapy as compared to untreated patients. The epitope inhibited the binding of sera from chronic HCV patients to the homologous HCV peptide, polyprotein 743-762.
