Towards a vaccine for rheumatic fever: identification of a conserved target epitope on M protein of group A streptococci.
|
| description: |
Overlapping 20-mer peptides representing the conserved region (residues 145-159) of the M5 protein of S. pyogenes were synthesized to identify a broadly reactive target epitope
The addition of peptide 145 repeatedly blocked the inhibition of growth mediated by whole serum of purified antibodies from Aborigines, but not the sera two other subjects who had lower concentrations of specific antibodies. The authors report a correlation between antibody titer and the degree of opsonization.
