A patient's sera cross-reacted with the epitope and with peptide P16, the sequence of which was derived from another infected patient and shares 7 positions. Binding of the patient's sera to the epitope was inhibited 71.4% by absorption of the sera with immobilized peptide P16. was not inhibited significantly (6.8%) by absorption of the sera with immobilized peptide P16. The authors conclude that the sera contain cross-reactive antibodies.
