name:
Antibody responses to hepatitis C virus hypervariable region 1: evidence for cross-reactivity and immune-mediated sequence variation.
description:
The epitope is derived from isolates of patients with HCV genotype 2 a/c.
A patient's sera cross-reacted with the epitope and with peptide P20, the sequence of which was derived from another infected patient and shares 7 positions. Binding of the patient's sera to the epitope was inhibited 70.8% by absorption of the sera with immobilized peptide P20. Binding to the epitope was inhibited 76.2% by absorption of the sera with immobilized epitope. The authors conclude that the sera contain variant-specific and cross-reactive antibodies. Cross-reactivity was not related to the number of homologous residues between peptides.
