name:
Antibody responses to hepatitis C virus hypervariable region 1: evidence for cross-reactivity and immune-mediated sequence variation.
description:
The epitope is derived from isolates of patients with HCV genotype 2 a/c.
Sera was collected at baseline (t0) and after a 1-year follow-up (t12) from 7 patients with chronic HCV type 1b infection. The t0 and t12 sera from one patient reacted strongly and sera from 3 other patients reacted weakly with the epitope. In total, the epitope was recognized by 8 of 14 sera. The predominant IgG subclass was IgG1 in the patient sera analyzed. The authors conclude that sera from 6 of 7 patients displayed considerable cross-reactivity for a variable number of HVR1 sequences in addition to the patient-derived sequence.
