The patient's sera reacted with the epitope and peptide P8, the sequence of which was derived from another infected patient and shares 7 positions. Binding of the patient's sera to the epitope was inhibited 1% by absorption of the sera with immobilized peptide P8. The authors conclude that the sera contain variant-specific and cross-reactive antibodies. Cross-reactivity was not related to the number of homologous residues between peptides.
