Absence of antigenic diversity in Pf155, a major parasite antigen in membranes of erythrocytes infected with Plasmodium falciparum.
|
| description: |
The C-terminal end of the ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA
Pf155) contains multiple tandem repeats of the epitope.
A mouse mAb, raised against the epitope, exhibited bright membrane staining of glutaraldehyde-fixed and air-dried monolayers of ring-infected erthrocytes from a Liberian patient, using the erthrocyte membrane immunofluorescence (EMIF) assay. The MoMAb stained ring-infected erthrocytes obtained using 11 different laboratory strains of P. falciparum or clones obtained from infected Aotus monkeys and 26 erythrocyte samples isolated from Liberian (11 of 11), Colombian (9 of 9), and Swedish (6 of 6 infected in West or Central Africa or Asia) patients. The authors conclude that the ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen Pf155 is antigenically invariant.
