The circumsporozoite protein contains multiple tandem repeats of the sequence NAGQPQAQGDGA.
The epitope inhibited binding of mAbs 2G3, 5H8, 8B8 and 8E11 to an extract of P. knowlesi sporozoites containing the circumsporozoite protein. The dodecapeptide (QAQGDGANAGQP) containing a single repeat unit was equally effective in inhibiting binding of mAbs 2G3 and 5H8, but did not inhibit mAb 8E11.
