Rationale for development of a synthetic vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
|
| description: |
The circumsporozoite protein contains multiple tandem repeats of the sequence NANP.
Sera from donors living in the malaria-endemic area of The Gambia, Africa reacted with the epitope. The percentage of positive sera increased with age, from 21% in donors 1-14 years to 85% in adults > 34 years. The epitope inhibited binding of the positive sera to glutaraldehyde-fixed sporozoites, as detected by indirect immunofluorescence.
