Serum antibodies from malaria-exposed people recognize conserved epitopes formed by the two epidermal growth factor motifs of MSP1(19), the carboxy-terminal fragment of the major merozoite surface protein of Plasmodium falciparum.
|
| description: |
This is the EGF-like domain 1 of the MSP1 protein (19kDa fragment).
Donors from Gambia were shown to recognize this fragment in ELISA. The level of recongition of the complete 19-kDa fragment increased with age, but no such correlation could be detected for this domain. Reactivity was dependent on the intact disulfide bonds, since the reduced domain was not significantly recognized in 3/3 EGF1 reactive sera. Isotype analysis demonstrated that the predominant antibody response is IgG1.
