| name: |
Plasmodium falciparum: selection of parasite subpopulations with decreased sensitivity for antibody-mediated growth inhibition in vitro.
|
| description: |
The ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA/Pf155) contains multiple tandem repeats of the sequence EENV.
The concentration of epitope-specific rabbit antibody R20 required to detect P. falciparum parasites was not affected by continual growth of parasites in culture for 12 weeks with R20 or a mAb to a different epitope or subsequent culture without the antibody. Parasites were detected by indirect immunofluorescence of unfixed and air-dried parasite-infected red blood cells or glutaraldehyde fixed air-dried monolayers of P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes. The authors conclude that antibody-selection presssure did not change antigen expression.
