The epitope conform to the consensus motif X-P-X-X-S-X-T-X, found to have homology to the LWPCKSNTD region of ricin chain B, to which the selecting mAb was raised. The sequence LWPCKSNTD is also found in the sequence-related, non-toxic lectin RCA-1, also from R. communis.
The epitope-specific anti-ricin chain B mAb inhibits ricin binding to mouse splenocytes, polarized human lung epithelial cells and to the purified glycoprotein asialofetuin (also as the Fab fragment), as well as it reduced the ricin-induced lethality on Vero cells in vitro.
