name:
Application of two different kinds of sera against the Proteus penneri lipopolysaccharide core region in search of epitopes determining cross-reactions with antibodies.
description:
The epitope is deduced from reactivity of P. penneri LPS of known structure. It is conserved in P.penneri 8, 7, 14, and 15, and probably in P. penneri 34 and 133, for which the core structure is not known.
The anti-core antisera is shown to react with the core region of LPS of several P. penneri strains (8, 34, 7, 14, 15 and 133) by Western blot and ELISA. Based on the known structure of the core of these strains, the epitope was deduced. Also, the presence of a alpha-Glc-(1-4) linkage at the non-reducing end of the epitope in the core of strains 7, 14 and 15 is shown to produce a weaker recognition, while the glycine residue attached to alpha-GlcN of the epitope in strains 8, 7 and 14 did not influence the recognition.
