The proline-rich region of pneumococcal surface proteins A and C contains surface-accessible epitopes common to all pneumococci and elicits antibody-mediated protection against sepsis.
|
| description: |
Immunization with the epitope provided some protection upon challenge with S. pneumoniae 3JYP2670 (carrying the epitope sequence with subsitutions at positions 1 to 4). Also, antibodies from immunized mice stained the surface of the whole bacteria in FACS, confirming that the epitope is surface exposed, and the antibody levels staining the surface of whole bacteria in the sera of the immunized mice that subsequently survived the challenge was higher than in those that became moribund.
