Vaccines prepared from chimeras of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) induce neutralizing antibodies and protective immunity to multiple serotypes of FMDV.

| description: |
The epitope is described by Baxt et al. (1989) J. Virol. 63:2143 [PMID: 2467993]. Numbers differ because the paper uses numbering from the mature VP3 protein which is processed from the larger polyprotein that is found in the database.
Epitope-specific mAb reactive with an epitope in VP3 of A12 FMDV neutralized the activity of A12 virus in vitro. When amino acids 131-157 from the G-H loop of VP1 protein of strain A12 (NGTNKYSASGSGVRGDFGSLAPRVARQ) were replaced with amino acids from the G-H loop of strain O1 BFS (NGECRYSRNAVPNLRGDLQYLAQKVART) or strain C3 Resende (TGTTTYTTSARRGDLAHLATAHARH), reactivity to this VP3 epitope remained unaffected.
