description:	Numbering of the amino acids of VP1 by the authors is normalized to that of serotype O, subtype 1 because of deletions and insertions in other strains. Serum from rabbits immunized with the epitope-KLH conjugate neutralized the A12 virus (FMDV A subtype strain 119) significantly better than the A10 virus (FMDV A subtype strain 61). The authors conclude that the epitope sequence contributes to subtype specificity.
