The anti-peptide 12 serum neutralized BEV strain M-4, and reacted with virus-infected cells by immunofluorescence. Strain M-4 encodes a peptide identical to the epitope. The antiserum cross-reacted more weakly with strains RM-2 and PS-87, which encode the more divergent peptide sequences.
