The peptide was synthesized with a Gly-Gly spacer followed by a Tyr or Cys residue at the amino terminus. The latter amino acids were used for linking the peptides to suitable carrier proteins for immunization.
The epitope was recognized by a virus neutralizing monoclonal antibody, which was previously shown to be incapable of recognizing intact VP1.
