The epitope was synthesized with an N-terminal Cys residue. The epitope sequence is conserved among enteroviruses and the source organism was arbitrarily assigned.
No IgM reactivity to the epitope was detected in sera from a another panel of 12 patients with culture-proven enteroviral infections, although the assay suffered from background problems.
