MAb 23HA6 neutralized the virus in a plaque reduction assay and in a mouse protection assay, and bound to purified A5 SP-86 virions by RIA. The critical epitopic residue recognized by mAb 23HA6 was determined by sequence analysis of neutralization-resistant variants selected with the mAb. Variants with mutation D198G in VP1 were not neutralized by the mAb.
