Monoclonal antibodies, against O1 serotype foot-and-mouth disease virus, from a natural bovine host, recognize similar antigenic features to those defined by the mouse.

| description: |
The paper uses the numbering of the processed VP1 protein whereas the accession sequence uses the numbering of the polyprotein.
The epitopic residue recognized my BMAb MH5 was determined by sequence analysis of escape mutants selected by the antibody. A variant of strain O1 Kaufbeuren with mutation N46S in VP1 was not neutralized by MH5. BMAb MH5 neutralized FMDV strain O1 Lausanne or O1 Kaufbeuren, and passively protected mice from virus challenge. The antibody reacted with the virus in a sandwich ELISA, but not with the purified virus bound directly to the solid-phase support.
