Antibodies raised in a natural host and monoclonal antibodies recognize similar antigenic features of foot-and-mouth disease virus.

| description: |
The sera from infected and vaccinated swine recognized the epitope and a number of tested analogs of the epitope. Substitution at position 11 (H146) greatly diminished binding. Alanine substitution at positions 5-7 (RGD) strongly affected reactivity, although substitution of Arg had a less pronounced effect than substitution of Gly or Asp. The peptide was synthesized to contain a C-terminal cysteine residue for conjugation to KLH.
