The presence of an epitope was deduced based on reactivity of patient sera with the intact GAD65 protein and loss of reactivity with a fusion protein of GAD65 and glutathione S. transferase, lacking GAD65 residues 1-6. Sera from about 10% of the 10 patients with PAS without diabetes recognized the epitope, whereas none of the 11 PAS patients with diabetes reacted.
