The epitope sequence was previously described in Carter et al, J Virol:77(21) 2003 [PMID:14557648].
Mutation of the epitotic residues eliminated the ability of the VLP to absorb the neutralizing activity of the sera. Mutation of the HPV31 VLP to match the sequence of the HPV16 VLP partially transferred the ability to absorb neutralizing antibodies.
