The epitope is assigned as the whole repeating unit since anti-serotype b strain Y4 antisera reacted with the native purified polysaccharide in double diffusion and quantitative precipitin tests, and the quantitative precipitin inhibition tests showed that the degrees of inhibition of the serotype b antigen by the component sugars L-rhamnose and D-fucose were very low, while the hydrolysate of the native antigen is an effective competitor.
