The M glycoprotein was able to inhibit the binding of the epitope-specific mAb to plate-bound M glycoprotein. Direct binding was also shown by ELISA and Western blot. The epitope was identified by showing lack of binding to protein with the terminal Ser removed by Edman degradation. Desialylated protein also showed reduced biding, indicating that the sialic acid resides were also involved in the mAb binding.
