The Lewis x antigen, which is contained in this epitope region, is stated to be differentially expressed on polypeptides and few lipids of S. mansoni. It is unclear if the whole lacto-N-fucopentaose III pentasaccharide can also be expressed in this organism.
The mAb 504B1 epitope is not exposed on the surface of miracidia and cercariae. Surface expression of this carbohydrate epitope, however, is initiated after the transformation of cercariae to schistosomula and was maintained throughout the adult life in both sexes. The sugar determinant appeared only on the body of the larvae and not on the tail. In adults, also the gut was labelled with this mAb.
