| name: |
Schistosoma mansoni infection in humans and primates induces cytolytic antibodies to surface Le(x) determinants on myeloid cells.
|
| description: |
The Lewis x antigen (Lex
beta-Gal-1-4-[alpha-Fuc-1-3]-beta-GlcNAc1-R), which is present on the surfaces of human cells, is also synthesized by the human helminthic parasite Schistosoma mansoni. The involvement in immune recognition in this reference is deduced.
The infected human sera reacted with the epitope-containing pentasaccharide. No recognition is found by uninfected sera. The fucose involvement in the reactivity is demonstrated since antibodies failed to bind to LNnT-BSA, that lacks the fucose linked a1,3 to GlcNAc found in LNFPIII.
