name:
Phenotypic heterogeneity in expression of epitopes in the Cryptococcus neoformans capsule.
description:
The epitope-specific mAb stained cells of Cryptococcus neoformans serotype A, strain CN6, grown in synthetic medium and isolated from brains of infected mice. In cells grown in synthetic medium, there was considerable variability in binding to cells. Some cells showed a pattern of bright binding to the capsule that surrounded the parent cell; other cells showed a fine punctate binding pattern, but most cells failed to bind the antibody. Staining was bright and uniform in cells isolated from infected brains. The mAb did not stain capsules surrounding new buds of cells. Staining was lost when cells were de-O-acetylated.
