The immune response to group B streptococcus type III capsular polysaccharide is directed to the -Glc-GlcNAc-Gal- backbone epitope.
|
| description: |
The epitope structure represents the repetitive unit of the branched capsular polysaccharide of Group B Streptococcus serotype III lacing the sialic acid that substitutes the position 3 of the branch galactose.
The anti-epitope antisera was unable to react with native, heat-killed GBS type III cells. When the surface polysaccharide of GBS type III was desialidated, the reactivity was strong, which is in accordance with the structure of the immunogen polysaccharide, originally obtained from S. pnemococcus type 14 and differing only by the lack of sialic acid that is present as a substitutent in the branch of the GBS type III polysaccharide.
