B cells that produce immunoglobulin E mediate colitis in BALB/c mice.

| description: |
Administration of the epitope induced colitis in mice. The use of mice deficient in IgE production or by blocking IgE binding established that the pathogenic factor during epitope induced colitis is IgE. IL-4Ralpha deficient mice were protected against epitope induced disease. Adoptive transfer of IL-4Ralpha+ CD4+ T cells prior to epitope treatment resulted in colitis, demonstrating the role these cells play in disease progression. Adoptive transfer of IL-13 null CD4+ T cells demonstrated that the T cell response is dependent upon IL-13.
