Immunization of guinea pigs with epitope-expressing recombinant BCG 6 weeks prior to challenge with 20-50 CFU of virulent H37Rv by the aerosol route resulted in marked reduction in the lung and spleen bacillary load and in the Mitchison score comparing gross pathological lesions, when compared to the saline treatment, but not significantly different from that seen in animals immunized with BCG alone.
