Distinct conformational states of HIV-1 gp41 are recognized by neutralizing and non-neutralizing antibodies.
description:
Epitope residues are calculated from the structure [PDB: 3P30] as the antigen residues at 4 Å
distance from the antibody.
The epitope-specific mAb 1281 bound preferentially to the construct gp41-post versus gp41-inter, as determined by surface plasmon resonance. The antigen gp41-post is a construct to capture a gp41 conformation that exists only when membrane fusion is complete (six-helix conformation with partial MPER (membrane proximal external region)). In comparison, the antigen gp41-inter is a construct to capture a gp41 conformation that exists in a fusion-intermediate state.
