The epitope is the terminal disaccharide of the alpha-Gal epitope expressed in different glycoproteins and glycolipids from several mammalian species, such as pigs and rabbits, but absent in humans and primates.
Gal-alpha-1-4-Gal moderately inhibited binding of epitope-reactive antibodies to porcine asialoglycophorin. It failed to inhibit the agglutination of rabbit erythrocytes by epitope-specific antibodies.
