The epitope residues recognized by Mab MA28-7 were deduced based on the ability to neutralize different strains of enterovirus 71 (EV71) in a standard micro-neutralization assay using Vero cells. Mab MA28-7 neutralized EV71 strains C7/Osaka (genotype B4), SK-EV006 (genotype B3) and 1095/Shiga (genotype C2). It did not neutralize EV71 strains Nagoya (genotype B1), Bulgaria (genotype B1) or BrCr/tr (genotype A). Within the MA28-7-binding footprint VP1, only the epitope residues, especially Gly-145, were conserved among the neutralization-sensitive strains.
