Injection of the epitope along with HgCl2 increased the susceptibility to mercury-induced autoimmunity, as shown by enhanced production of IgE anti-nucleolar autoantibodies. Injection of the epitope on day -7, in conjunction with a low dose of HgCl2, prevented the establishment of tolerance as assayed by the production of IgG1, IgG2a and IgE anti-nucleolar autoantibodies.
